- Limbus_vertebra abstract "A limbus vertebra is a defect in the anterior margin of the vertebral body (mostly). The anterior superior corner of a single vertebra is the common site for this defect. It can also be seen at the inferior corner as well as the posterior margin but very rarely. This anterior intraosseous disc herniation which produces Limbus vertebra was first described by Schmorl in 1927 and later in detail by Niedner. It appears as a triangular shaped bone fragment, it always mimics a fracture but it is actually an intra-vertebral body herniation of the disc material. This is not a disease or does not require any urgent medical attention, but it is a defect which occurs less commonly. it does not create any problems hence needs no medication or any kind of treatment.Limbus vertebra, if it is in posterior aspect may cause nerve root compression but the anterior ones will not create any difficulty. It generally appears as a triangular margin at the anterior superior of the vertebral body. There will be sclerotic margins on the fragment and on the adjacent vertebral body. It can be differentiated from a fracture as fractures will not have sclerotic margins as will limbus vertebra. This defect is commonly seen in patients have had Scheuermann's Disease It can be called as 'Rim lesions'. The term Limbus vertebra derived from the Latin nominative limbus and genitive modifier vertebrae, thus is singular.Schmorl's nodes are also caused by herniation of the nucleus pulposus but that appears more centrally of a vertebra.".
