He is a 7th degree black and red belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), 3 time winner of the Pan American Champion, and 1998 Brazilian National Champion in BJJ. Taught by the Gracie family, he is known for his own work training military and law-enforcement in BJJ techniques.Palhares started his training in Rio De Janeiro under Rolls Gracie until Rolls died in 1982 in a hang-gliding accident. Palhares continued training under Rickson Gracie and it was Rickson Gracie together with Helio Gracie who gave Palhares his black belt in 1984.In 1999 Palhares, then a 6th degree black belt, was brought from Brazil to teach at Rickson’s Academy in L.A. Since 2007, Palhares has operated his own Academy in Jacksonville FL, Jacksonville Gracie Jiu Jitsu, teaches seminars around the globe, and conducts private lessons. Palhares received his 7th degree black belt in 2010 by Grand Master Carlos Robson Gracie, Red Belt 9th Degree (President of the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Rio de Janeiro).He has won the Rio de Janeiro championships several times. He won the Pan American Champion super heavy weight senior division and open in 2000, 2003, and 2004. In 2002 he took 3rd place in Masters and Seniors International., 2003 In 1998 he was the Brazilian National Champion in heavy weight senior division and open.As an instructor of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in both the US and Europe, Palhares has been involved in introducing BJJ techniques into combatives training in the military and with law-enforcement. Palhares is a certified Army Combatives instructor, and initiated the development of an on-going Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) based Combatives training program inside the US Navy SEALS compound in Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, VA. In 2010, in preparation for their deployment to Afghanistan, the 3rd Battalion 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) invited Luiz Palhares, to conduct a five month long training program at Camp Blanding. Palhares also continues to provide instruction to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO).In conjunction with the Florida National Guard, Palhares has conducted two tournaments every year at the National Guard Armory in Jacksonville, FL, since 2008 to promote BJJ in the NE Florida area. One in the spring called the BJJ Open], and one in the fall called the Sunshine State BJJ Tournament.In 2006, Palhares released two instructional DVDs featuring Closed Guard Attacks, and White to Blue Belt.".
