In this reaction, ethanol is oxidized (losing two hydrogens) and NADP+ is reduced (by accepting hydrogen) to form NADPH. This process consumes ATP and dissipates heat, thus leading to the hypothesis that long term drinkers see an increase in resting energy expenditure.".
