- Mimi_Sheller abstract "Mimi Sheller (born 1967) is a professor of sociology and the founding Director of the New Mobilities Research and Policy Center at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She attended Harvard University where she earned an A.B in History and Literature in 1988. She received an M.A. in Sociology and Historical Studies in 1993 and a Ph.D. in 1998 at the New School for Social Research.She is a visiting senior research fellow at the Center for Mobilities Research (CeMoRe) at Lancaster University in England.A prolific writer, she is the author of numerous articles and two books as well as several anthologies. Her research interests vary. Her first book Democracy After Slavery: Black Publics and Peasant Radicalism in Haiti and Jamaica (Macmillan Caribbean, 2000) based on her dissertation received the Choice Magazine Outstanding Book Award in 2002. Her second book is Consuming the Caribbean: From Arawaks to Zombies (Routledge, 2003). Along with British sociologistJohn Urry, she is the co-editor of Tourism Mobilities: Places to Play, Places in Play (Routledge, 2004) and Mobile Technologies of the City (Routledge 2006). They also co-founded the journal, Mobilities. She is considered one of the foremost experts in mobilities research. Her latest book "Citizenship from Below: Erotic Agency and Caribbean Freedom" (Duke) was published in 2012.".
