- Pathological_demand_avoidance abstract "Pathological demand avoidance (PDA), or Newson's Syndrome, is a subtype of autism characterized by an avoidance of the ordinary demands of life. It is identified as a syndrome through the clinical work of UK child psychologist Elizabeth Newson. Newson proposed it to be a specific pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) within the PDD "family" which is now loosely termed the autism spectrum.PDA is not part of the current manual of mental disorders DSM-IV, or the World Health Organisation's manual ICD-10, nor is it part of the proposed revision, DSM-5. Many clinicians are sceptical about the diagnosis and discuss whether this is a separate condition or whether the behaviours found in PDA can be explained as a form of other disorders, for instance, attachment disorder, personality disorder or a female form of autism. However PDA has gained a degree of recognition and acceptance from some clinicians as a diagnosis, sufficient that the National Autistic Society (a UK autism charity) produced a leaflet entitled 'What is PDA?' after recognising the disorder in 2008.".
