- Renato_Athias abstract "Renato Monteiro Athias (born 1953) has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Dom Bosco College of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters (MG – Brazil, 1975). He has a master's degree in Ethnology - University of Paris X, (Nanterre) (1982) with a dissertation about the notion of the Ethnic Identity in Brazilian Anthropology with Prof. Dr. Julian Pitt-Rivers as his advisor. He has a PhD in Ethnology in the same university (1995) with a thesis on the Hierarchic Relations among two indigenous groups of the Rio Negro (Amazon), focusing specifically on the relation between the Hupdah and the Tukano, supervised by Prof. Jacques Galinier and Patrick Menget. He has carried out studies in the media area and television in the University of Southampton (UK). He is now coordinating the Center of Studies and Research on Ethnicity (NEPE) of Pernambuco's Federal University (UFPE – Brazil). He is Associate Professor of the Graduate Program in Anthropology by the UFPE, and is also professor of the Ibero America Anthropolology Interuniversity Doctoral Program in Salamanca University, Spain.He has concluded, in 2007 a post-doctoral research in the University of Paris X, with a scholarship given by the CAPES program, and has been involved in affirmative actions in the universities since 1999, when he implemented the first accord of a program of post-graduation with an indigenous organization as to support the entrance of indigenous professors in a graduate education programs (PPGA/FOIRN). After that he participated in the elaboration of the Ford Foundation Scholarship Program (IFP)/ Carlos Chagas Foundation, as a program to stimulate the entrance of Indians and black people in graduate education programs in Brazil. He remained as a member of the Committee of Selection of the scholarship program until 2004. Later he participated as member of the Committee of Selection of the IFP Scholarship Program in Chile, Bolivia and Peru under the auspices of the Ford Foundation at the Equitas Foundation of Chile. Remaining on this commission until 2008. He organized, in the ANPOCS (2007), a debate on the access of Indians to the university. Since 2001 he has participated in the Commission of elaboration of the proposal of the Course of Intercultural License by the Federal University of Pernambuco. Recently (2008) he organized a book with the researchs texts from the indigenous scholarship holders of the Ford Foundation Scholarship Program, published by the Carlos Chagas Foundation in 2008. As coordinator of the Group of Research and Studies on Ethnicity, he is developing an observatory on affirmative politics, whose main objective is to subsidize the State in the formulation, elaboration and implementation of public politics directed to affirmative action in the universities of Pernambuco. Recently he has organized an international conference on Ethnicity and has published more about indigenous groups from Amazon Region of Brazil, as well as Ethnographic Film Festivals of RecifeAthias has experience in the area of Anthropology, with emphasis in Indigenous Ethnology, especially in the areas of indigenous health and visual anthropology, doing research projects with the Pankararu Indians (in Pernambuco) and with the indigenous people of the Rio Negro, Amazon, specifically with the Hupdah of the Nadahup language family. Currently, Renato co-ordinates the Laboratory of Visual Anthropology of the Center of Image, Sound & Human Sciences of the, UFPE. He was the National Coordinator of the GT Visual Anthropology of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (ABA) and Director of the National Association of Post-Graduation in Social Sciences (ANPOCS).".
