• Roberta_Lima abstract "Roberta Lima (born 2 December 1974 in Manaus, Brazil) is an Austrian-based video and performance artist.Roberta Lima studied Architecture and Urban Planning at Unisinos in southern Brazil and then went on to complete her graduate studies in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.Lima explores her own body as theme for her work using various media, such as photographs, video and installations. She investigates and appropriates aspects of different spaces and contexts like subculture, science, popular media, historical reference and feminist theory. Her work questions the subjects of space and performative interaction. At the same time she aims for an aesthetic atmosphere in her performances and installations. The negotiated positions of beauty are created in Lima's work by framing the modernistic old-school feel with cables, cameras, screens, projections and other tools of her trade as a video artist. Lima makes the conditions of production visible, the same way she regularly does with the interior of her body. But she also refers to the technical sphere in her reflections on body politics and uses the same technology to sculpt herself and the space. Lima considers the media to be a co-performer rather than a tool for documentation.Astrid Peterle writes: “Lima’s use of technology is, therefore, much more than a mere tool for generating photos and videos, which are often seen as the only commercial viable relicts of performance art. In her most recent works not only does Lima make her artistic process more visible through video of performance actions in anticipation of the exhibition and conceptual notes on the space that she calls drawings, but her practice also moves increasingly away from penetration of the skin towards penetration of space.”In 2012, Lima began to make sculptures, continuing to interweave her experiences as an architect and as a performer. In Displacement (2002, White Box, New York) Lima built a concrete cube with a hole, which represented the act of invasion–once of her own body, now of spaces. The cube contained a spy camera–once placed in her body, it was now “displaced”. The cables work as a link between the bodies, the objects, and the gallery. Using movements of falling and crashing–of the cube, the camera, and the concrete–Lima created analogies between the flow of energy in the electric cables, of the blood in bodies, and of capital in societies. Furthermore, Displacement was a continuation of Lima’s questions of how performance art can be presented and perceived. Lima also started to incorporate objects from her earlier performances into the production of new works, like the sculptures Ready-Mod (a wooden box with needles and mixed materials), that were presented at her solo exhibition “Aesthetics of Risk” (Galerie Charim, Vienna, 2012). InsideOut (Art Berlin Contemporary, Berlin, 2013) is a sculpture consisting of the dresses from The Dress Trilogy (Kapelica, Ljubljana, 2007; Kunstraum NOE, 2007; Donau Festival, Krems, 2008). Once pierced to her body, the dresses are now wrapped in plastic and wax, pierced and suspended in space with a metal cable that stretches from the ceiling to the floor. When Lima recontextualizes familiar objects—like the spy camera, the needles or the scalpel—she challenges not only the viewer’s perspective, but also his/her expectations: Lima uses the scalpel to cut the sculpture instead of herself. With this recontextualization of the objects and traces of her earlier works, Lima aims to start a dialogue between old and new; eternal and ephemeral; accessibility and withdrawnness.".
