- Stafford_FM abstract "Stafford FM is a local community radio station serving Stafford, Staffordshire, UK, broadcasting digitally via the website, tune in apps, the Stafford FM mobile app and wi-fi radios.Stafford FM broadcasts 24 hours a day with an eclectic mix of popular music from the 1950s to today. Stafford FM promotes the interests of the community and is a 'not for profit' community broadcaster. It intends to apply for a full-time FM community radio license for Stafford in the first half of 2014.Stafford is one of the last remaining county towns not to have its own dedicated radio service. Whilst Signal Radio and BBC Radio Stoke both have relay transmitters situated in the town, or in proximity, Stafford is under-served by local radio, which and the need for the County Town to have a voice was first born out of an idea some years ago. Until 2007, Signal One (operated by UTV ) had an opt-out Breakfast Show for Stafford, which was broadcast some 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. However, the decision was taken by Signal's owners, UTV, to cancel the programme and simulcast its 102.6 FM service across the town. This was met with protest, and whilst Stafford FM had not re-emerged at this time, the founders had always anticipated bringing the popular name back to the area. Signal Radio have since neglected the County Town, and despite their best efforts to serve Stafford people, they have been unable to truly etch themselves into the community.[citation needed] However, Stafford FM has forged some valuable relationships and become a voice for Staffordshire's County Town. The need for Stafford to have a radio station has never been more apparent, and Stafford FM has since become the number 1 choice for local charities, advertisers, community groups and organisations.[citation needed]Stafford FM have hosted hundreds of events, including the Stafford Christmas lights switch on, the Olympic torch relay in 2012, the annual Stafford Half Marathon, the Staffordand District Round Table Shugborough Bonfire, Live at the Castle, along with dozens of community events. The station has conducted seven FM broadcast trials and has become a familiar name in the County Town.Stafford FM was first launched in 2001 as an FM broadcast trial, serving Staffordshire's County Town. It was born out of an idea by former Signal Radio presenter, Ray Crowther and local businessman Richard Lamont. It originally broadcast four 28-day restricted services licenses between 2001 and 2003 featuring ex-Signal presenters Stu Haycock, Paul Dean and Dave Evison, from its studio's in the heart of Stafford, at Gaol Mews. However, the then regulator, the Radio Authority was disbanded and replaced by Ofcom, it was announced there would be no more license dished out. The project was put on ice in 2004.Stafford FM re-emerged in 2011, launching as a full-time online community radio station on Monday 5 September at 6.00pm. Former Signal Radio presenter and founder member, Ray Crowther re-launched the station with a special programme from its new home on Marston Road, Stafford, Staffordshire, UK. The station conducted a further three restricted services licenses between 2011 and 2013, taking the opportunity to cement its position as Stafford's favourite community radio station.[citation needed] The station is still broadcasting today, but at its new home on Mount Street, Stafford. Some of the original members are at the station, including Ray Crowther, Stu Haycock and Gary Hazlehurst.Stafford FM was broadcasting its eighth FM broadcast trial on Monday 31 March 2014.".
