- Swanland abstract "Swanland is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire in England. The village is about 7 miles (11 km) to the west of Kingston upon Hull city centre and 2 miles (3.2 km) north of the Humber Estuary on the B1231 road. To the east lies West Ella, to the west, separated by farmland, lies Melton and to the south lies North Ferriby. According to the 2011 UK census, Swanland parish had a population of 3,802, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 3,688.At the centre of the village is a pond on which swans have been kept. However, due to the small size of the pond and the death of one of the swans in a road traffic accident, the birds are no longer allowed to be kept there.Swanland is twinned with the village of Lestrem in Northern France. There are two main churches in the village: St. Barnabas is a Church of England church and Christ Church, also known as 'The Church by the Pond', is a Methodist / United Reformed church.St Barnabas was established in 1899 as a "mission room" for the parish of All Saints' North Ferriby, but expanded rapidly as a fellowship in the 1970s & 80s and, having outgrown the site now occupied by Church Mews, the church family sponsored a large new purpose-built church and community centre at the eastern end of the village which was completed in 1992. Swanland became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1995 when the Team Vicar Rev Richard Hill became the Vicar of Swanland. The current Vicar is Rev Francis Scott.Swanland Primary School is in the centre of the village and teaches around 400 children from ages 4 to 11.Mere House, an old Victorian building which sits on the edge of the main pond, is, according to local folklore, haunted by a number of poltergeists who once inhabited the dwelling.".
