Born to a family of actors, Matsu made her debut as a stage performer before taking on roles in TV dramas, starting with the NHK taiga drama series Hana no Ran (1994), and then films, with Tokyo Biyori (1997). The single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for shipments of 400,000 copies. The same year her debut album, Sora no Kagami was released, which peaked at number 4 on the Oricon chart and sold over 300,000 copies; it too earned a platinum certification from the RIAJ. These achievements helped Matsu win the award for the Best New Artist of the Year at the 12th Japan Gold Disc Awards. In 1998, Matsu starred in the Shunji Iwai short film April Story and performed piano tracks for its soundtrack album. The same year, her second studio album, Ai no Tobira was released through Arista Japan. The album peaked at number 3 on the Oricon chart and was certified Gold by the RIAJ. The next year, Matsu's single "Yume no Shizuku" peaked at number 8 on the Oricon chart, becoming her fourth top ten hit on the Oricon singles chart. The parent album, Itsuka, Sakura no Ame ni... became another Gold album for Matsu upon its release. After a gap of about one year, her fourth studio album A Piece of Life and her first compilation album Five Years: Singles were released. Both the albums peaked within the top 5 of the Oricon albums chart and the latter was certified Gold by the RIAJ. A live album of the concert tour in support of A Piece of Life released in 2002, peaked at number 32 on the Oricon albums chart. However, the DVD of the tour reached number 8 on the Oricon DVD chart. Matsu's next two studio albums, both peaked at number 12 on the Oricon chart. In 2004, "Toki no Fune", co-written by Matsu along with Akeboshi and produced by the latter, was released as the first single from her seventh studio album, Bokura ga Ita. The song, which was used as the theme song of the TBS drama series Tōbōsha Runaway peaked at number 5 on the Oricon singles chart. However, the album only peaked at number 14 on the albums chart. Two years later, in 2006, she released "Minna Hitori", which became another top 10 hit for Matsu. The parent studio album, Cherish You also peaked at the same position on the Oricon albums chart. Following a disappointing performance of her ninth studio album, Time for Music and its accompanying singles, Matsu's musical career saw a surge with the release of the song "Let It Go" which she performed for the Japanese version of the Disney-animated movie, Frozen. The song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and has been certified Gold by the RIAJ.".
