- The_Green_Bay_Tree abstract "The Green Bay Tree was a 1933 Broadway three act drama written by Mordaunt Shairp, produced and staged by Jed Harris, scenic design by Robert Edmond Jones. It ran for 166 performances from October 20, 1933 to March 1934 at the Cort Theatre. Harris’s direction was lauded for subtlety in exploring the dubious relationship between a rich licentious man and his protege, a poor, handsome lad (played by Olivier). Olivier disliked Harris and supposedly based his later portrayal of Richard III upon Harris. Cast members Jill Esmond and Laurence Olivier had been married since 1930. This was O.P. Heggie's final Broadway role, as Mr. William Owen. The play was not based on Louis Bromfield's 1924 novel The Green Bay Tree. It was later been produced at the Northampton Repertory in England in March 1934 with Errol Flynn. It was included in Burns Mantle's The Best Plays of 1933-1934.".
