- The_Stopwatch_Gang abstract "The Stopwatch Gang consisted of three naturalized Canadians who made a living robbing banks in the United States and Canada — an estimated 100 banks and $15 million CDN. Consisting of Paddy Mitchell, Lionel Wright and Stephen Reid. The gang's greatest heist took place at a Bank of America branch in San Diego in 1980, when the US$283,000 they stole set a California record. Stephen Reid later became a noted Canadian author after writing Jackrabbit Parole and being paroled. In 1999, Reid re-offended, was sentenced to 18 years in prison and released on day parole on January 28, 2008.The gang was famous for brilliant planning of their jobs. They were known for robbing banks in 90 seconds or less and getting away with no trace. The group got nicknamed 'The Stopwatch Gang' by the FBI because the gang leader was seen wearing a stopwatch around his neck while on the job. They did a large number of bank robberies in the 1980s along the California coast with large sums of money stolen. "How the Stopwatch gang pulled of all the bank robberies step by step breakdown of how they did it: The first step the Stopwatch Gang would take in robbing a bank was that they would make new identities for themselves. The Stopwatch Gang leader Paddy Mitchell would scan through newspapers at the library and look through the obituaries to try and find someone that was born in one state and died in another state that was close to your age. Then once he had found someone that matched with what he was looking for he would apply for those persons Birth Certificate. They would also make credit cards and a billing address so there would not be any suspicion about their new identities. The Gang lived in Arizona and were known though as successful concert promoter’s often making trips to California. The next step for their planning was to rent get away vehicles. Lionel Wright was is charge of renting the cars and getting the gaudy disguises, weapons. Now they would spend the next couple days casing the targeted bank. This would include going into the bank and regularly to make and set up bank accounts and also to writing and filling out checks so they could get make routine visits. While at the bank they would time the pickups and deliveries of the armored trucks to know their exact routes and time schedule for the armored trucks. They would case the bank until they had everything timed out and they were ready to rob the bank smoothly. The stopwatch gang would steal licence plates to vehicles similar to their getaway cars so they couldn’t be tracked and they could easily remove them. They would also dress up their cars with racing stripes that could be removed quickly. Now they would all dress up in the gaudy disguise that Lionel Wright found so people wouldn’t be able to recognize them. They would also cover up their finger prints so they wouldn’t leave any traceable prints. The stopwatch gang would arrive 5 minutes before the armored truck. They would go in and fake filling out checks and deposits slips and wait for the right time to rob the bank. They would watch the first bags go by that were full of coins and then when they started bringing the bags full of cash they would strike. They would pull their guns out and force everyone down on the ground and take the guard's gun and the money and leave the bank and hop in the getaway car and it was all done under 90 seconds. They just robbed the bank and now the final step in their plan was the getaway plan. The first thing the stopwatch gang would do is get rid of all the disguises and put them in a garbage bag. They would then switch the plates back and remove the racing stripes and split up into different vehicles. Lionel Wright would then get rid of the evidence. He would wait until the garbage truck is going for the garbage pickup before throwing the garbage bag in. The Stopwatch gang did this many times throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s and they never shot any one once that’s why they also got the name the gentle bandits.Thirty years ago the technology wasn’t as advanced as it is today making it possible to rob the banks as quickly and as easily as the stopwatch gang did. First if you compare the security cameras from 30 years ago to today there is a huge improvement from what they used to perform like. For example security cameras 30 years ago were black and white and didn’t cover that many angles and were in a fixed position. Unlike the security cameras we have today that are coloured and that cover every possible angle and are able to move so there would be no blind spots. Also in the last 30 years security guards have been trained better to ensure that this would not happen as often. 30 years ago there would only be two security guards and they wouldn’t close the bank when they were taking the money out so people could rob them like the stopwatch gang did. Nowadays there would be more security guards on site and the bank would be closed when making cash exchanges. Fingerprint technology has also really changed in the past 30 years. It used to take a couple days to trace a print and find a match. Now with the better technology and newer technology you can trace and find matches for finger prints in a matter of hours. These three big technology advances make it extremely difficult to rob a bank, and almost impossible to get away with it.Where the stopwatch gang went wrong and what lead them to be arrested: The first thing the Stopwatch gang did wrong was they did not dispose the bag full of evidence properly. Lionel Wright was in charge of disposing the evidence in a nearby dumpster right when the garbage was to be picked up but he threw the bag full of evidence into the dumpster before the truck got there and the police ended up finding that bag full of evidence. Lionel Wright should have burnt the evidence so it could not be found and their identities would have never been known. There was also one other area where the stopwatch gang messed up and that was letting their car rentals be traced back to their identities. They should have made sure that the car rental records did not lead the police right to them.Although the stopwatch gang will always be remembered for their brilliant planning, they were also one of the most successful bank robbers in all time they still got caught by one major detail that got overlooked."".
