- The_Three_Stooges abstract "The Three Stooges were an American vaudeville and comedy act of the mid–20th century (1930–1975) best known for their numerous short subject films, still syndicated to television. Their hallmark was physical farce and slapstick. In films, the Stooges were commonly known by their first names: "Moe, Larry, and Curly" or "Moe, Larry, and Shemp," among other lineups depending on the films; there were six or seven stooges. Moe and Larry were always present until the very last years of the ensemble's forty-plus-year run, when they both died. The act started as part of an late-twenties vaudeville comedy act Ted Healy and his Southern Gentlemen, consisting of Healy, and the three brothers 'Horwitz': a young Moe Howard, his brother Shemp Howard, and Larry Fine. This threesome then did one feature film with Healy entitled Soup to Nuts before Shemp left to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by his other brother Curly Howard and the trio having begun taking separate Vaudeville and theatre bookings then became billed as The Three Stooges. When Curly suffered a debilitating stroke in May 1946, and with some arm twisting Shemp returned, reinstating the original lineup until Shemp's death in November, 1955. Film actor Joe Palma was used as a temporary stand-in; the maneuver thereafter became known as the term of art Fake Shemp— to complete four Shemp-era shorts under contract. The coining of the term took place before a new contract from Columbia but after comic Joe Besser joined as the third Stooge in a run '56-57— but he began desiring to bow out and did so in 1958 to nurse an ailing spouse. Then Columbia decided to terminate its shorts division and the two remaining stooges seriously contemplated retirement. With contractual rights released by Columbia, the production studio, Screen Gems then syndicated the old comedy shorts to television and suddenly the Stooges were stars.Having turned down the role around '46-47 because of his own ongoing shorts comic series, comic actor Joe DeRita who bore a strong physical resemblance to Curly became ("Curly Joe") in 1958 and replaced the reluctant Besser who'd done some continuing work. With the Television exposure, the act regained momentum throughout the 1960s as popular kiddie fare until Larry Fine's paralyzing stroke in January 1970 doomed its long run.Larry Fine died from a series of strokes in January 1975. Moe (Moses Harry Horwitz) tried one final time to revive the Stooges with longtime supporting actor Emil Sitka in Larry's role, sometimes known as 'The Three Stooges, Mark V' but this attempt was cut short with Moe's death in May 1975.".
