Historically the parish of Thorp Arch was not in any of the Ridings of Yorkshire but in the Ainsty, a separate division. It has a population of 1,123.The village is situated between the villages of Walton and Boston Spa. It is dwarfed by the adjacent Thorp Arch Trading Estate, Wealstun Prison, and in the shadow of the main buildings of the British Library.The village once had a railway station (situated adjacent to the trading estate) on the Harrogate to Church Fenton line.Thorp Arch is also home to Leeds United's training ground and academy based on Walton Road. This facility was opened in 1990 to replace a more spartan facility adjacent to the club's Elland Road football stadium in Leeds.In 2010, the owner of the Segway company, Jimi Heselden died at Thorp Arch after the Segway he was riding plummeted off a cliff. He had graciously allowed a dog walker to pass him on a narrow pathway.".
