- XEPE-AM abstract "XEPE-AM or ESPN 1700 is an English-language sports radio station licensed to Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. Like other such stations, it focuses upon listeners in the San Diego, California area across the international border in the United States.XEPE originally signed on mid-August 2005 with a business talk format. It carried strictly business talk under the branding "Cash 1700" until August 1, 2007, when the switch to a talk radio format. The programming was mostly conservative talk radio featuring Dennis Miller, and Michael Reagan and financial talk show host Ray Lucia.XEPE broadcasts at 10,000 watts. The 1700 kHz frequency has de facto clear channel status since the Federal Communications Commission has no expanded AM band stations at 1700 in California. It has been known that XEPE-AM has been picked up at night in Seattle and other western US cities and even as far away as Uruguay and Japan[citation needed].XEPE's U.S. programming and sales rights are owned by the same company which operates XEPRS-AM (1090 kHz, XX 1090) / XHPRS-FM (FM 105.7, 105.7 The Walrus), with studios and offices in the San Diego community of La Jolla. San Diego 1700 AM is the flagship station home of nationally syndicated financial talk show host Ray Lucia. The station tried to have some balance by adding some left-leaning progressive talk shows. They hoped to fill in the hole in the San Diego market left by the demise of KLSD by adding a daily progressive talk show hosted by Stacy Taylor. San Diego 1700 also carried The Lionel Show during the overnight hours.By January 2009, the Stacy Taylor show and the Mark Larson show were both canceled due to high production cost that resulted in major losses.[citation needed]Since late-2009, San Diego 1700 had become a simulcast partner with sister XEPRS-AM. The only unique, non-sports programming that still aired on San Diego 1700 were the Ray Lucia Show and Garden Compass since 1700 has served as their flagship station, and one-hour local talk shows that have aired weekdays that are business-oriented.On September 27, 2010 XEPE announced that it had changed its format from talk to sports talk. The station was branded as "ESPN Radio 1700" with programming from ESPN Radio effective October 6, 2010.".
