- XL-IM abstract "XL-IM is an injection molding technique that uses crosslinking polymerization during molding cycle. This is a unique single step operation for finished products. The closed cell crosslinked molded foam produced by the polyolefin elastomers (POE) take advantage of XL-IM providing an innovative technology for shaping foam parts with greater finish, durability and details. For instance a unique molding operation called Out-Mold-Expansion (OME) in combination with an emerging crosslinked injection molding technique called XL-IM has been developed and successfully employed in producing injection molded foam parts. The technique of crosslinking molded foam, XL-IM, is a method that is also used in the production of closed cell elastomeric and flexible PVC foams. Initially, the process requires compounding the polymer with crosslinker, blowing agent, and other additives. Care must be taken to keep the temperature low during processing as to avoid premature crosslinking and foaming. One or more of the following processes will be required for compounding: Banbury mixer, batch-kneader mixer, twin-screw extruder, or continuous Co-Kneader. The next step is determined by the required final product.".
