- catalog abstract "William O. Douglas served on the Supreme Court of the United States for over 36 years, from 1939 to 1975, the longest term of any Justice. His tenure was marked by an unyielding and brilliantly executed determination to- as he frequently put it- "keep the government off the backs of the people." Together with Hugo Black, Justice Douglas was responsible for many of the Supreme Court decisions which extended the protection of the Due Process Clause of the Constitution; limited the power of the large corporations; protected the maverick and the dissident from government harassment; extended and guarded the civil rights of blacks, of women and of other minorities; safeguarded American public lands and resources from those who would plunder them ... and on ... and on. He wrote more dissenting opinions (and wrote them faster) than any other Justice, and yet many of those dissents were later reflected in legislation or else in the majority opinions of the Court itself. Timely, newsworthy, historically important, This book is the personal record of that great lifelong struggle. It continues the memoirs Justice Douglas began so eloquently in his best-selling 'Go East, Young Man.' For the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, one of the Justices- himself- has set about to give the judicial history of the great issues of American life and to show how these issues were dealt with in the Conference Room and "among the Brethren." With a deep understanding of the Court process, with a pungent wit and an intimate knowledge both of the law and of those who interpreted it, Douglas reveals the Supreme Court as it has never been seen before. -- from Book Jacket.".

The study has two major objectives: to review the research findings, theories and methodologies relevant to the developmental study of music; and to offer a framework within which these can be organised so as to pave the way for future research. It describes how psychologists have approached the study of music, and discusses the relationship between thinking and music in pre-schoolers and schoolchildren in areas such as singing, aesthetic appreciation, rhythmic and melodic development, and the acquisition of harmony and tonality. The book describes the development of musical taste, and discusses the questions of musical creativity, and of the social psychology of musical taste and fashion.".

- catalog abstract "The discovery of the great Early Bronze Age library at Tell Mardikh, the site of the ancient city of Ebla, has altered significantly our understanding of the history and culture of ancient Syria and the neighboring areas. This volume contains essays that provide additional texts from the site, as well as studies on previously published texts that further the understanding of both the language and culture of the great city-state. These articles are by members of the Ebla Seminar at New York University, as well as from the epigrapher of the Italian expedition at Ebla, Alfonso Archi. Debate about the identification and connections of the language of the tablets found at Ebla will probably continue for some time, and the place and influence of the city in the web of ancient Syrian and Near Eastern culture will be discussed for years to come. This volume provides additional information relevant to both concerns and contributes to clarification of the issues involved. The fourth and final volume in the series Eblaitica: Essays on the Ebla Archives and Eblaite Language embodies eight cogent essays by a variety of specialists. Of particular interest in this issue is the second part of Michael Astour's history of Ebla. Contributors include Alfonso Archi, Michael C. Astour, Cyrus H. Gordon, Gary A. Rendsburg, Robert R. The 1882 Act has lasted over the years without substantial amendment except for the Cheques Act 1957 giving bankers some extra protection with regard to unindorsed or irregularly indorsed cheques. The Act assisted negotiationability by creating the "holder in due course" who is given substantial protection by the Act with a variety of presumptions being made in his favor. This book contains the complete text of the 1882 Act in its current amended form together with detailed explanatory notes to each sectionl. These explanatory notes contain full references to cases decided under each section.".
- catalog abstract ""This book sets out to clarify the nature of the aesthetic as a category within the theory of historical materialism. It opens with an analysis of Marx's brief discussion of Greek art in the Grundrisse, moves through a series of readings of specifically bourgeois texts, including those of Ruskin, G.M. Hopkins, Nietzsche and Henry James, and then to the terrain of Marxism in the concepts of history underwriting the work of Fredric Jameson and Jean-Paul Sartre. Sprinkler detours through the recent works of Perry Anderson to set the stage for a systematic consideration of the theoretical itinerary and continuing relevance of the contributions of Louis Althusser. Imaginary Relations is a cogently argued attempt to shift the terrain of Marxist theorizing about art from the domain of ideology considered as simply false consciousness to a concept of art which makes aesthetic texts sources of empirical data about the real, historical world."--Publisher description.".
- catalog abstract "For more than 50 years, it has been recognized that diet influences cancer formation both in humans and in experimental animals. In fact, early investigators successfully retarded the onset of tumors in animals by dietary manipulation. Such findings led to an early optimism that cancer would prove to be yet another disease resulting from dietary imbalances and might thus be amenable to prevention or cure by appropriate on cancer formation was not only very complex. Subsequent studies showed that the influence of diet on cancer formation was not only very complex, it also did not appear to play a direct causative role in carcinogenesis. Thus during the mid-1950s scientific interest in diet and cancer greatly waned. By the early 1970s, however a resurging interest in diet and cancer became evident. This field of activity has continued to grow. Yet for over 20 years, no comprehensive meeting has been held to summarize the major developments concerning dietary modification of carcinogenesis over a broad range of essential nutrients in carcinogenesis from January 30 to February 1, 1985, in Bethesda, Maryland, under the auspices of the National Cancer Institute. - catalog abstract "Kershaw examines how the deification of 'the Fuhrer' and the Nazi's propaganda machine effectively solidified the Third Reich's hold on German culture from the 1920's to 1945. "Hitler's personality alone can scarcely explain his immense popularity and political effectiveness during the 1930s and '40s. Behind his strong hold over the German people lay the hopes and perceptions of the millions who adored him and consequently imbued him with larger-than-life characteristics. Based on secret popular opinion reports compiled by both the Nazis and their political enemies, this study of the Nazi state charts the creation, growth, and decline of the "Hitler Myth." Kershaw demonstrates how the manufactured Fuhrer-cult formed a crucial integrating force in the Third Reich and acted as a vital catalyst in attaining Nazi political aims. Translated from German, this book affords readers a chilling look at how these masters of propaganda built on the beliefs, phobias, and predjudices of the day to create a popular image of Hitler that was at great odds with reality."--Publisher description.".
