- catalog abstract "After Paul D. finds his old slave friend Sethe in Ohio and moves in with her and her daughter Denver, a strange girl comes along by the name of "Beloved." Sethe and Denver take her in and then strange things begin to happen. Set in rural Ohio several years after the Civil War, this profoundly affecting chronicle of slavery and its aftermath is Toni Morrison's greatest novel, a dazzling achievement, and the most spellbinding reading experience of the decade. A brutally powerful, mesmerizing story- read it and tremble. At the center of Toni Morrison's fifth novel, which earned her the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, is an almost unspeakable act of horror and heroism: a woman brutally kills her infant daughter rather than allow her to be enslaved. The woman is Sethe, and the novel traces her journey from slavery to freedom during and immediately following the Civil War. Woven into this circular, mesmerizing narrative are the horrible truths of Sethe's past: the incredible cruelties she endured as a slave, and the hardships she suffered in her journey north to freedom. Just as Sethe finds the past too painful to remember, and the future just "a matter of keeping the past at bay," her story is almost too painful to read. Yet Morrison manages to imbue the wreckage of her characters' lives with compassion, humanity, and humor. Part ghost story, part history lesson, part folk tale, Beloved finds beauty in the unbearable, and lets us all see the enduring promise of hope that lies in anyones future.".

As Finley Hooper says in his introduction, "Anyone concerned about present problems will profit from reading about how the Romans went about solving theirs- with the added advantage of knowing how it all turned out." Although scholars will find the events narrated in this book familiar, they will not necessarily share its insights or agree with its interpretations. This is a book to read, enjoy- and argue about. -- Back cover.".

This book seeks to give readers a quantitative understanding of some important aspects of general relativistic cosmology starting only with mathematics and Newtonian ideas in physics. The book is concerned mainly with various models that have been proposed to explain the large-scale structure of the universe: the Friedmann models, steady-state models, and model universes involving pressure. Topics also covered include special relativity, red-shift magnitude relations, radio source counts, Olbers' paradox, horizons, and cosmological coincidences.".
- catalog abstract "This book is an attempt at a comprehensive analysis and assessment of the many strands of Leavis's work, emphasising the basic unity of his ideas. The literary criticism needs to be understood in the context of his wider social concerns, and so this study begins with a discussion of his views on society and culture, explaining his critique of modern civilisation and the importance he attributed to the values of the cultural tradition and to the educated public who are the effective embodiment of those values. From here, Professor Bilan moves on to consider the basic ideas informing Leavis's criticism of both poetry and the novel. Attention is drawn to the kind of criteria that Leavis employed in his writings and, in particular, to the sense in which they can be described as 'moral'. Professor Bilan shows that Leavis's preoccupations persisted and evolved, and that the principle underlying them is not, as if often thought to be the case, a moral one, but rather a religious one, which is clarified in the closing argument of the book.".

- catalog abstract "The querelle des anciens et des modernes - the question whether writers should imitate the classics or use literary forms which seemed more suited to their own era - had been debated in Europe since the earliest days of the Renaissance. In seventeenth-century France, the modernist faction, led by Perrault, argued that a literary work owed its essential character to the prevailing social and cultural conditions; the more advanced the culture, the better its literature was likely to be. This reflected badly on classical writers since antiquity in this sense was manifestly inferior to contemporary France. It reflected particularly badly on Homer, since the great Homeric epics were seen as products of a primitive age. This book analyses the development of the querelle following the adoption of this theory, and also touches on a number of important incidental issues. Throughout, Dr Simonsuuri relates the development of ideas about Homer to developments in the fields of aesthetics, social theory and anthropology.".

- catalog abstract "From the first appearance of the lead essay in this collection in 1969, Vivian Gornick established herself as one of the most respected voices in the new literature of contemporary feminism. Speaking always for herself, always maintaining her independence, while at the same time reflecting and commenting upon current feminist concerns, Gornick became one of the most eagerly read writers in The Village Voice, The New York Times and other periodicals. With characteristic passion and a quick, penetrating intelligence, she dissects the culture that is at the root of female oppression. This collection will stand as a permanent record of the evolution of one feminist's personal consciousness over the seven years that paralleled the renaissance of American feminism. These are essays to be read and reread for years to come, as both men and women begin to assimilate what we have all learned from the women's movement.--From publisher description.".

- catalog abstract ""The German reoccupation of the Rhineland on March 7, 1936, was, as some realized even then, a 'turning point' in world history, for Hitler's fait accompli allowed him to refortify the demilitarized zone and proceed with his expansionist plans in eastern and southeastern Europe ... While much blame has subsequently been placed on the French for failing to act decisively against the Germans, contemporary international opinion regarded Great Britain as the 'key' to the situation. British responsibility in the crisis stemmed from Britain's role as a guarantor power of the Treaty of Locarno, which provided that the Rhineland demilitarized zone as established by the Treaty of Versailles would remain neutralized. Moreover, many recalled Stanley Baldwin's pronouncement in 1934 that with the development of modern aircraft the Rhine would henceforth have to be regarded as Britain's frontier. Since Germany's action of March 7 was clearly a breach of the Versailles and Locarno Treaties, why then did the British apparently fail to carry out their obligations and thus contribute to an inevitable war? This dissertation is an attempt to answer that question. It is primarily concerned with an analysis of the official British reaction to the Rhineland crisis which occurred between November, 1935, and May, 1936. Of necessity, such a study must emphasize diplomatic, political, and economic factors which circumscribed British efforts to deal with the problem. It is also concerned with the effects which timing and personal qualities of leadership exerted on world events ... the historian ... is forced to the conclusion that during the Rhineland crisis the British followed a policy of drift which was, as Sir Austen Chamberlain noted, no policy at all ... [and] may still wonder why men, certain of Hitler's expansionist plans, appeared to be weak of will, but he cannot fail to have a trace of sympathy for British leaders who were restrained by public opinion that wanted no coercive measures taken against Germany"--Preface.".

- catalog abstract ""Benjamin and Marilyn Dunne, Bobo, Annie, Suzie. Here, in this tremendously moving novel, is an American family today, riding out a kind of crisis of feelings and identity that is particular to our time. We see them, the Dunnes, through the eyes of the young husband, Benjamin-in his mid-thirties-whose apparently solid and agreeable life is beginning to unravel. His marriage is coming apart. His wife, Marilyn, suddenly and deeply wants more than her days contain. His twelve-year-old boy is becoming unbearably sullen (you talk to Bobo and he puts his fingers in his ears). Benjamin's own emotional vertigo is turning him toward another woman ... What happens as he tries to pull his life together is told in the dramatic, fresh, and beautifully rendered context of a half-pint baseball season. Benjamin, trying to contain his anger at his infuriating twelve-year-old, volunteers to coach the team on which Bobo plays. Bobo's response" "Trade me." The other kids catch his hostility. And Benjamin, even while coping with all the adult nonsense and intrigue that surround small-fry baseball leagues, finds himself obsessively determined to win-to win the respect of the team, to win Bobo, to win games. To win back his own slipping command of himself and his life. As the summer progresses, the small and the large dramas intermingle and reflect each other. The daily suspense of the ball field-that miniature yet altogether serious world of contest and passion-is both part of, and emblem of, the larger suspense, the turbulence, the conflict, the striving that takes place within Benjamin as he tries to resolve his panics and confusions. What will be his relationship with his wife (he thinks they belong together, but do they?); with the woman who, in his bad time, has given him wine and cheese and cheerfulness and taken him into her bed (what does he owe her?); with his children; and with himself? ..."--Jacket.".
