- catalog abstract "Here, for the first time in English translation, are contemporary accounts of working-class life during the final decades of the Russian Empire. Written by workers and other close observers of their milieu, these five selections recreate the world of Russian labor during a period of rapid industrialization and social change, a world far more complex and varied than has often been assumed. The accounts in The Russian Worker explore the daily experiences, social relations, and aspirations of factory, artisanal, and sales-clerical workers, both in and outside the place of employment. Through the eyes of contemporaries we see the routine, the organization of work, and authority relations on the shop floor as well as conditions that workers encountered in providing for food and lodging and their experiences in the areas of religion, recreation, cultural activities, family ties, and links with the countryside. With its vivid and detailed descriptions of working-class life, The Russian Worker provides new material on such important topics as the formation of workers' social identities, the position of women, patterns of stratification, and workers' concepts of status differentiation. An introductory essay by Victoria Bonnell places the selections in a historical context and examines some of the central issues in the study of Russian labor. The collection will be of value not only to specialists in the Russian field, but also to historians, sociologists, economists, and others with an interest in the sociology of work, and the history of working women.".

- catalog abstract "Born in Louisville, Kentucky, four years before the start of the Civil War, Brandeis came of age in a simple, rural America undergoing vast transition into an industrial powerhouse. The transition spawned a myriad of social problems and inequities, for which he blamed big business as well as the constant erosion of older Jeffersonian values he knew and cherished. But he was never a romanticist who wanted to turn back the clock. During the early days of his highly successful legal career, Brandeis recognized that the worst abuses of the emerging industrial system might be remedied by practical reformers who translated their idealism into specific, workable laws and programs that the average citizen could understand. Progressive reform became his life's work. From defending the public interest in Boston utility cases and investigating fraudulent insurance practices, Brandeis rose rapidly on the national scene to become head of the powerful American Zionist movement after he rediscovered his Jewish identity while arbitrating the passionate and historic New York garment workers' strike. While a Zionist leader, he was instrumental in the attempt to reestablish a Jewish homeland in Palestine. In 1916, in what was the classic fight of the progressive era, Brandeis was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by Woodrow Wilson, to whom he was a close and trusted advisor, over strenuous objections of conservatives and anti-Semites who feared his democratic zeal and ardent reformist thinking. During the next two decades, "Holmes and Brandeis dissenting" became a sort of battle cry in the struggle to keep alive a flexible jurisprudence faithful to progressive values and to experimentation with modern social problems. The author masterfully examines Brandeis' career as a progressive and Zionist, interpreting his life from a new perspective that solidly establishes him as one of the great reformers in American history, and one of the greatest legal craftsmen ever to sit on the high court. -- from Book Jacket.".

- catalog abstract "Part philosophical meditation, part cultural critique, this work explores the nature of physical suffering. Elaine Scarry bases her study on a wide range of sources: literature and art, medical case histories, documents on torture compiled by Amnesty International, legal transcripts of personal injury trials, and military and strategic writings by such figures as Clausewitz, Churchill, Liddell Hart, and Henry Kissinger. Scarry begins with the fact of pain's inexpressibility. Not only is physical pain difficult to describe in words, it also actively destroys language, reducing sufferers in the most extreme cases to an inarticulate state of cries and moans. Scarry goes on to analyse the political ramifications of deliberately inflicted pain, specifically in the cases of warfare and torture, and she demonstrates how political regimes use the power of physical pain to attack and break down the sufferer's sense of self. Finally she turns to examples of artistic and cultural activity; actions achieved in the face of pain and difficulty.".

- catalog abstract "This timely work is the first book in several years to review and update important developments in the study of rings of continuous functions. Integrating the recent efforts of leading mathematicians, Rings of Continuous Functions presents chapters with varying emphasis on algebra, analysis, and general topology with particular focus on category theory, cardinality axioms, and set theory. Additionally, historical perspectives and a review of early contributions by leading Soviet mathematicians such as P.S. Aleksandrov and A.N. Tychonov help provide a full, up-to-date understanding of current knowledge. An unparalleled overview of the state of the art, Rings of Continuous Functions will be an invaluable reference for topologists, algebraists, analysts, and geometers active in the field, and an excellent introduction for interested nonspecialist mathematicians. Also, research problems raised in each chapter and in a special final chapter offer provocative avenues for further research -- facilitated by more than 300 literature citations.".

- catalog abstract "The use of porphyrins for localization and photodynamic therapy of neoplastic disease has been the topic several international symposia reviews and books during the proceeding five years. The literature on this topic has continued to grow, as have the numbers of presentations at national and international meetings relating to photobiology, chemistry, and lasers. In this volume, it is the intention of the editor to provide both information on current research projects, and detailed methodology used in such investigation. A bibliography on the subjects of porphyrin localization and therapy in included. The manuscripts contained in this volume are based on reports given at a porphyrin Photosensitization workshop which was held in Philadelphia, July 6-7, 1984. This Workshop was supported by NIH grant CA 36746, together with funds from the Fogarty International Center. Authors were requested to update their contributions to provide a summary of progress to mid 1985. Manuscripts containing material not presented in Philadelphia are also included, notably a series of articles describing current clinical and pre-clinical results from China. Since the Philadelphia Workshop, a meeting was held in Alghero, Sardinia (May, 1985), and additional conferences are now being planned; this attests to the continued interest in photodynamic therapy involving porphyrin in photosensitization. The successful development of this modality has required communication among a variety of workers in diverse fields. These include porphyrin chemistry, photochemistry, and photobiology, analytical chemistry, biophysics, pharmacology, surgery and medicine. While the clinical been the mingling of workers from many different disciplines, with resulting collaborations sometimes extending to unrelated topics. The use of porphyrins for tumor-localization had its beginnings in work reported by Lipson 25 years ago. This involved a collaborative effort with Dr. Samuel Schwartz, at the Mayo Clinic, which yielded a porphyrin product termed HPD (hematoporphyrin derivative) which was then, and still remains, the most effective tumor photosensitizer known. This work was of little initial interest to the biomedical field, since appropriate instrumentation for its exploitation was not available until the development of lasers and optical fibers for light distribution. But a small group of workers continued to examine porphyrin-tumor affinity relationships, generally with little outside support. The current cascade of research projects, literature reports and conferences was initiated by a series of investigations by Dr. T.J. Dougherty, at the Roswell Park Memorial institute in Buffalo. Dougherty provided a reliable source of drug, together with information on light sources, clinical protocols, and other information to interested investigators. A series of pioneering physicians, notably James Kennedy in Ontario, Ian Forbes in Australia, Oscar Balchum in Los Angeles, Yoshihiro Hayata in Japan, and Denis Cortese at the Mayo Clinic, provided the early effort, many of the fundamentals of porphyrin photosensitization have been reported, and guidelines for further work are clearly visible. This volume is intended to provide a reference for further studies in the field of porphyrin phototherapy, as well as a description of the current status of selected fields of research.".
- catalog abstract "In the summer of 1978, Musa al Sadr, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Shia sect in Lebanon, disappeared mysteriously while on a visit to Libya. As in the Shia myth of the "Hidden Imam," this modern-day Imam left his followers upholding his legacy and awaiting his return. Considered an outsider when he had arrived in Lebanon in 1959 from his native Iran, he gradually assumed the role of charismatic mullah, and was instrumental in transforming the Shia, a quiescent and downtrodden Islamic minority, into committed political activists. What sort of person was Musa al Sadr? What beliefs in the Shia doctrine did his life embody? Where did he fit into the tangle of Lebanon's warring factions? What was behind his disappearance? In this fascinating and compelling narrative, Fouad Ajami resurrects the Shia's neglected history, both distant and recent, and interweaves the life and work of Musa al Sadr with the larger strands of the Shia past. -- Publisher description.".

As one author after the other stresses, this volume is equally a testament to what is not known. /// The chapters in this section [Part I] reflect the lack of agreement in past research over the nature of giftedness, but the authors raise similar questions for future investigations. /// These five chapters set forth major issues facing investigators in the field of giftedness. From the diverse points of view emerges one commonality: the call for prospective developmental research, guided by theory, to aid our understanding of the complex of factors that contribute to gifted performance. /// The authors of the chapters in this section [Part II] discuss giftedness in a social perspective and suggest areas in which research and innovative action might be most useful. /// In this section [Part III], authors explore approaches to studying the development of the gifted from diverse and innovative points of view. This is a text of history of Mesopotamia in its own right. By the time history gets back this far, the lines become very blurred, rather like parallel lines intersecting on the horizon. Literature, religion, archaeology, sociology, psychology -- all of these disciplines become intertwined in Jacobsen's text as he looks at Sumerian society. - catalog abstract "During the Tudor period, Parliament was transformed from a medieval into an essentially modern institution. Parliament was used to legitimise Tudor rule, to reject the authority of the Pope and establish the Anglicasn church and to effect a massive transfer of property from Church to Crown. In the process, Parliament - King, Lords and Commons - became sovereign. The lower house achieved parity with teh upper, and Acts of Parliament became the supreme for of law. But as the subject of historiographical debate, Tudor parliaments have another importance for us. A generation of scholars traced the origins of the English Civil War back into the sixteenth century: they saw the parliaments of the time as growing progressively more powerful, opposing royal policies and attemtping to restrict royal authority. This interpretation was challenged by the 'revisionists' of the 1970s, who saw the parliaments neither as an arena for political conflict nor as seeking to limit royal power, but as a body which continued to support and equip the Crown and the govenring class. Graves here evaluates the two interpretations while attempting to avoid their more extreme positions. Examining the historiography and the institutional aspects of Parliament, he then gives a chronological account of the membership, attendance, legislation and politics of successive parliaments. Particular attention is paid to the collective parliamentary influence of peers, to great men in Parliament, and to organisational problems. Graves concludes with a clear and judicious evaluation of the Tudor years in the history of Parliament. -- Book cover.".

Drawing upon the methodology of the new social history, the authors use oral history, hospital records, city directories, rank and file writings, as well as more traditional historical sources to examine the groups, institutions, and social movements which brought about changes in the American health system at particular historical moments. The essays in this volume address three themes of central concern to the health field: the shifting boundaries between professional and lay control over the definition of health and disease; the social and economic consequences of the changing focus of health care delivery; and the complex relationship between workers, professionals, and health care institutions. -- from Book Jacket".
