- catalog abstract ""The aim of this book is twofold. First, it sets out to introduce the reader to the field of general linguistics. It takes up such questions as: how do linguistics approach the enormously complex task of describing (and perhaps ultimately explaining) language? What concepts do they need and what kind of methodology do they employ? The second aim is to introduce the reader to the study of child-language developments. This is an area within the field of psycholinguistics as is one that has seen significant advances in the last twenty years of so. ... The overall aim, then is a fairly modest one--to provide those with a general interest in language with an informal introduction to what sometimes appears to be a rather forbidding and perhaps rather abstract subject, and to show the relevance of many basic concepts in linguistics to the study of language development in children."--Preface.".
