Notable sites depicted include Angkor Wat, Borobudur, Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, and the Ajanta Caves. A noted art historian and philosopher, he was an early interpreter of Indian culture to the West and a prolific writer, authoring many books and articles in the fields of art history, philosophy, religion, and social criticism. He moved to the United States in 1917 and was named the first curator of Indian art in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, a position he held until his death.".
