- catalog abstract "The collection consists of 28 manuscripts, 81 letterpress volumes, and 11 lithographic volumes, recording approximately 1,350 individual texts, primarily religious literature of the Shiite Ismaili community of the Indian subcontinent. The strength of the collection is the Isamili ginan literary texts. A genre of Indo-Muslim literature written in several Indian vernacular languages, gināns are poems recited during Ismaili religious services. Revered as sacred texts, they are believed to have been composed between the 13th and early 20th centuries by Ismaili missionaries, though not recorded until perhaps the 19th century. Their purpose was to spread the Ismaili form of Islam among the subcontinent's non-Muslim population, and to instruct new converts. Approximately 70 percent of the collection is in the Khojki script, a script peculiar to the Ismailis of Indo-Pakistan which was used to confine religious literature within the community in order to avoid persecution and foster a sense of common identity. Also included are a copy of a history of the community written in Gujarati, compilations of hagiographic stories of charismatic religious personalities, and polemic works defending the community's religious doctrines.".
