- catalog description "Samuel Deane (1733-1814), a minister in Portland, Mass. (later Maine), was born in July 1733 in Dedham, Mass. He received an AB from Harvard in 1760 and an AM in 1763. At Harvard, Deane served as College Librarian and Butler from 1760 until 1762 and as a Tutor from 1763 until his ordination on October 17, 1764 as the minister of the First Church of Falmouth (later Portland). Deane authored a popular agricultural book, The New-England Farmer, and received a DD from Brown University in 1790. Deane served as vice-president of Bowdoin for nearly twenty years before his death on October 18, 1814.".
