Smith wrote historical novels and articles, and Tyler, short stories, articles and poems. Together they wrote and staged plays in Worcester, MA. In 1885 the two women began careers as "typewriters" and stenographers in Worcester. Tyler was the first stenographer of the Worcester County Court, and the first Worcester stenography teacher. She founded Tyler's Business College, which pioneered in commercial education, teaching shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, and other business skills for over 25 years.".
