- catalog description "Marriage counselor, advocate for family planning, researcher, and educator (University of Pennsylvania, M.S.W., 1936, Ph.D., 1950), Emily Borie (Hartshorne) Mudd married microbiologist Stuart Mudd in 1922. Mudd became counselor and then executive director of the newly founded Marriage Council of Philadelphia (MCP) in the early 1930s. The MCP affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1952; in 1956 Mudd became the first woman full professor in the medical school.".

In the early 1970s Governor Milton Shapp appointed her co-chair of the Pennsylvania Abortion Law Commission; she was co-director of continuing education for the Masters & Johnson Institute in St. Louis, 1970-1981. Stuart Mudd died in 1975; in 1980 Mudd married Frederick Gloeckner, chair of the Board of Directors of the Winchell Company.".
