catalog abstract "This anthology comprises twenty-one extracts from the works of authorities on the main vegetation types of the earth. The editor has given prominence to certain plant communities because particular problems exist regarding their ecological status or regeneration processes; consequently there are as many as six extracts dealing with mid-latitude grasslands but only one on coniferous forests. The concept of convergent evolution is another fundamental topic in vegetation studies, and, since this is illustrated so well by the sclerophyllous scrub formations in the mid-latitude areas of winter rain and summer drought, four passages dealing with this type of community are included here.".
