- catalog abstract ""In the early 1960s, Bruce Davidson went against the habitual practice both of his photojournalist colleagues in the Magnum photo agency and the artsy snapshooters of the Social Landscape school by using a large-format view camera rather than the 35 mm or medium format to make social documentary photographs. From this fruitful experiment emerged a classic photobook--East 100th Street. For almost two years Davidson utilized the careful (and conspicuous) approach dictated by this cumbersome equipment to photograph one city block in East Harlem, New York. He returned day after day, knocking on doors, standing on the street, and always asking permission to photograph the Hispanic and African-American inhabitants of this underprivileged neighborhood."--The Photobook : A History Volume II / Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. London : Phaidon, 2004.".
