- catalog description "Cornelia "Cora" Mitchell Downs was born in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Henry Mitchell and Lily Campbell Downs. She was educated at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, receiving her Ph.D. in 1924. She became professor of bacteriology at the University of Kansas, where she took part in a successful research effort to conquer tularemia or rabbit fever.
