After passing the Massachusetts bar examination in 1923, Elizabeth McCarthy opened an office next door to that of William E. Hingston, a handwriting expert. She became his assistant and when he retired took over his practice. For many years the only women handwriting expert in the U.S., Elizabeth McCarthy testified in more than 3,000 court cases, including tax and voting disputes. She worked for the defense on the Alger Hiss and Greenglass-Rosenberg cases. In 1959 she married Richard Badlian, a Boston lawyer.".
