- catalog description "Early in the seventeenth-century, Native Americans in New England encountered Europeans who arrived on their shores intending to establish permanent settlements. These English settlers brought a commitment to the importance of religion and education, founding Harvard College in 1636. Native American engagement with Harvard began soon after the college’s inception. In 1648, the Massachusetts legislature passed an act encouraging the missionary work of John Eliot among Native Americans in New England, and Eliot received financial aid from the English Society for the Propagation of the Gospel among the Natives in New England. The Society was deprived of its charter after the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660, and Eliot fell into disfavor. Through the influence of Richard Baxter (1615-1691), an influential English clergyman, the Society was granted a new charter on February 7, 1661 and continued its missionary work in New England until the outbreak of the American Revolution.".
