- catalog description "Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) was an early American mathematician noted for his studies of ocean navigation. Harvard College awarded Bowditch an honorary LLD in 1802. Bowditch served as a Harvard Overseer (1810-1826) and Fellow (1826-1828). As a Fellow of the Harvard Corporation, Bowditch audited the college finances, finding over $120,000 in errors. To save money, Bowditch recommended resignations, pay cuts, faculty dismissals, and other cost-cutting measures. Harvard President John T. Kirkland resisted some of these measures. After Bowditch denounced Kirkland’s behavior in an 1828 Corporation meeting, Kirkland resigned and was replaced by Josiah Quincy. Kirkland’s supporters denounced Bowditch in the press and called for him to resign from the Harvard Corporation. In response, Bowditch prepared a manuscript volume entitled “College History” containing his description of the circumstances surrounding Kirkland’s resignation and the several reform measures he advocated at Harvard to improve the financial situation of the school. Although Bowditch freely showed his manuscript to friends, it was never published.".
