- catalog description "On October 1, 1918, branches of the Students’ Army Training Corps were organized at Harvard and at 515 other colleges and universities in the United States. This Corps was organized by the United States Government in an effort to mobilize all able bodied personnel over eighteen years of age in collegiate institutions in the country during World War I. At Harvard, school life was rearranged to accommodate the requirements of the War Department. A modified class schedule was implemented for members of the Students’ Army Training Corps and many of Harvard’s buildings, including freshman dormitories were assigned to Training Corps students. At Harvard, the Army branch of the Students’ Army Training Corps on November 1, 1918 included 701 college students and 565 high school students, while the Naval Unit had 441 men.
