- catalog description "Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982) was an American poet and writer. He served as the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard from 1949 to 1962. The observations written in the “Next Harvard” were largely the result of MacLeish’s service as Curator of the Nieman Foundation at Harvard from 1938 to 1939. They were not written as a comprehensive and detailed analysis of Harvard’s problems, but rather as MacLeish’s view of some of the major lines of development in progress at Harvard. MacLeish’s observations appeared originally in “The Atlantic Monthly” in May 1941. They were later reprinted in booklet form for distribution to Harvard alumni and friends of the University.".
