- catalog description "On February 21, 1949, East German communist Gerhart Eisler spoke on the Marxist theory of social change at Harvard under the auspices of the John Reed Society. Tremendous pressure was placed on the University to prevent Eisler from speaking, including a letter campaign from radio commentator Fulton Lewis Jr. In response to criticism, Harvard Dean Wilbur J. Bender defended Harvard’s case asserting that the “world is full of dangerous ideas and that we are both naïve and stupid if we believe that the way to prepare intelligent young men to face the world is to try to protect them from such ideas.” The rule that the College developed as a result of the Eisler controversy stressed that any recognized student organization could hold a meeting in a Harvard building, if they could find a room available, and if a speaker could be persuaded to come.".
