- catalog description "In response to concerns about Communism spreading through the United States post-World War II, loyalty oaths, taken to pledge allegiance to the United States, became widespread. In 1947, President Harry Truman required that all federal employees sign an oath; the practice became more widespread among state and local governments in the late 1940s and early 1950s. At Harvard, members of the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) were required to complete a questionnaire signifying if they belonged to any organizations listed on the Attorney General’s list of subversive organizations, whether they had attended any meetings, or knew members of such organizations; and if so, they were asked to identify these people. It was this “informer clause” that troubled many Harvard students and led to an organized campaign against the NROTC loyalty certificate. A committee, organized by the Harvard Young Progressives, representing several Harvard groups (American Veterans Committee Harvard Chapter, the Graduate Student Council, the Harvard Liberal Union, the Harvard Teachers Union, the Harvard Young Republican Club, the John Reed Club, the National Lawyers Guild Harvard Chapter, the United World Federalists Harvard Chapter), circulated a petition against the loyalty certificate on campus; collecting 1800 names. As a result of the protest against the NROTC loyalty certificate, and discussions between the Navy Department and the University, the “informer clause” of the loyalty certificate was removed in March 1950.".
