- catalog description "The Special Subcommittee to Investigate the Administration of the Internal Act and Other Internal Security Laws (1951-1977), more commonly known as the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (SISS) was authorized by the Eighty-first Congress to study and investigate violations of laws related to espionage, sabotage, and the internal security of the United States. In March 1953, three cases involving allegations of Communist activity were investigated by the SISS during hearings held at the Boston Federal Building. Leon Kamin (born 1927), a teaching fellow in social relations at Harvard University, took the Fifth Amendment when questioned by the Senate committee. He had been a Communist party member from 1947 to 1950 and a writer for the Daily Worker. Helen Deane Markham (1917-1966), assistant professor of anatomy at the Harvard Medical School, declined to answer questions before the investigators. Harvard Law School students Jonathan and David Lubell (1951-1954) were subpoenaed by the committee; both refused to testify. Maurice Halperin (AB 1927), chairman of the Department of Latin American Regional Studies at Boston University, also testified at the hearings.".
