- catalog description "In January 1956 the philosophy and psychology departments at Harvard invited physicist and physics professor Robert Oppenheimer to deliver the 1957 William James Lectures. An influential group of Harvard alumni protested against the decision (in 1953, after Oppenheimer opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, he was denied a government security clearance and lost his position with the Atomic Energy Commission) and sent a letter to 10,000 Harvard graduates expressing objections to Oppenheimer’s appointment. The appeal was rebuffed and Oppenheimer gave a series of eight lectures to large and overflowing audiences in Sanders Theater entitled “The Hope for Order.”".
