- catalog description "Villa I Tatti, The Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies is a center for advanced research in the humanities in Florence, Italy belonging to Harvard University. For almost sixty years it was the home of Bernard Berenson (1865–1959), an American art historian specializing in the Renaissance. Berenson died in 1959, bequeathing his estate, art collection, and library to Harvard University. After Berenson’s death, the Harvard Corporation asked John Coolidge, director of the Harvard Fogg Museum, to investigate the desirability and feasibility of Harvard operating an institute at Villa I Tatti. In 1961, “Villa I Tatti, The Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies,” was officially opened.".
