- catalog abstract "The plan for a course of lectures and faculty reports in this collection gives an account of Sidney Willard's teaching activities and provide a glimpse into Hebrew instruction at a time when the number of students selecting studies in Hebrew literature and language was declining at Harvard University. A plan for a course of public lectures, 1807 June 27. In this plan Willard provides a general outline of his course of instruction as the newly elected Hancock Professor of Hebrew and other Oriental Languages to the Corporation. According to Willard, his instruction consisted of introductory remarks on the connection between language and grammar, inquiries regarding the first words that man would have formed, discussions concerning the general principles of grammar and the distribution of speech around the globe, and finally, some observations on the origins of language and whether or not language was developed by man out of necessity or introduced to man by an "immediate revelation from Heaven." Five faculty reports, 1826 January 10-May 29. These faculty reports written by Willard to the President of Harvard College and the Board of Overseers, document Willard's activities as Hancock Professor of Hebrew and other Oriental Languages, both as a member of the faculty of the Theological School and as a member of the Grammar, Rhetoric, and Oratory department. These reports note Willard's instruction in English grammar, the Hebrew and German languages, the history of language, and his lectures about the history and content of the Books of the Old Testament. The reports also records the number of lectures Willard presented, the average length of time of his lectures, the number of excused and unexcused absences during the school term, the number of students in his Hebrew language classes, and his satisfaction over the progress of his students during the semester.".

- catalog description "Sidney Willard (1780-1856) was elected the third Hancock Professor of Hebrew and other Oriental Languages in December 1806. He served in this capacity in the Grammar, Rhetoric, and Oratory department until his resignation in 1831. During his tenure as Hancock Professor, in addition to teaching Hebrew, Willard taught English grammar and composition, and in 1827 assumed the duties for Latin instruction. In 1816, Willard was assigned the responsibility of providing Hebrew instruction to students in the newly established Theological School. In 1817, Willard published the well regarded "A Hebrew Grammar, Compiled from Some of its Best Authorities."".
- catalog description "The Hancock Professorship of Hebrew and other Oriental Languages was founded in 1764 by the will of Thomas Hancock, a wealthy Boston merchant, "to profess and teach the Oriental Languages, especially the Hebrew" at Harvard College. Hancock was the first native born American to establish a professorship in any college in New England or America. For several years after the establishment of the Hancock Professorship, the College struggled to finance it. In 1840 the Dexter Professorship on Biblical Literature was united with the Hancock Professorship. However, combining the two professorships together was financially insufficient and for more than 125 years, the College supplemented the Hancock endowment with unrestricted funds. When Charles L. Hancock (A.B. 1829), a relative of Thomas Hancock, died in 1890, he left a large bequest to the College to help support the Hancock Professorship. This bequest enabled the College to separate the Dexter Professorship from the Hancock Professorship in 1903. Nevertheless, the Hancock Professorship remained poorly funded and it was not until 1953, when the Hancock Professorship was assigned to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and became a beneficiary of the College's fund raising campaign, the Program for Harvard College, that the Corporation voted to sufficiently endow the Hancock chair.".
