- catalog abstract "The documents in this collection were likely created by Eliphalet Pearson as a member of the Harvard Corporation during his brief tenure as Acting President from 1804 to 1806 following the death of President Joseph Willard. The six documents in this collection are copies or extracts from earlier College and government records. They document the foundation of the Alford Professorship of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity; describe the aims and objectives of the Alford Professorship; include proposed amendments to the Professorship's statutes; and trace the payments made to Harvard College from the Alford Estate. Manuscript copy of an Account with Alford Executors, 1788 December 31, made by Eliphalet Pearson, ca. 1805. This folder contains a copy of a ledger account listing the amounts paid to Harvard University from the Alford Estate from 1772 to 1788 for the establishment of the Alford Professorship. The 1779/1780 payment records an adjustment for the monetary inflation of the Continental currency during the American Revolution by including a deduction for "depreciation." The December 31, 1788 entry reports the interest earned on the funds for this period. Manuscript copy of amendments proposed to the Alford Professorship of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity, undated, made by Eliphalet Pearson, ca. 1805. This folder contains proposed amendments to the course requirements as originally described in the Institution of the Alford Professorship of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity. Manuscript copy of original minutes for the Alford Professorship of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity, undated, made by Eliphalet Pearson, ca. 1805. This folder contains a slightly rewritten version of the principal duties of the Alford Professor. Manuscript copy of the Institution of the Alford Professorship of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity in Harvard College, by the Executors of the Will of John Alford, 1789 February 18, made by Eliphalet Pearson, ca. 1805. This folder contains three documents: a copy of the Institution and copies of two documents that appear to have been outlines or drafts of the Institution dated December 2, 1788 and January 1, 1789. The Institution document explains the aims and objectives of the Alford Professorship, records the requirements as to the contents of the professor's courses, notes the students to whom the courses are to be offered, and stipulates the moral and religious character of the Alford Professor.".

- catalog description "The Alford Professorship of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity was endowed in 1789 by Edmund Trowbridge and Richard Cary, executors of the will of John Alford (1686-1761). Although not a Harvard graduate, Alford had served on the Board of Overseers and bequeathed a large part of his estate to support the propagation of the Gospel among the Indians and for "pious and charitable uses" at Harvard College and the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University). The endowment was established during a time of theological liberalization at Harvard College which was characterized by a general trend away from an understanding of religion based on supernatural revelation and more towards an understanding of religion based on natural reason and observation. Under the direction of Trowbridge and Cary, the Alford Estate began making payments to Harvard College in 1765 which were to be held in a trust, with any interest earned to be added to the principal of the endowment until the Alford Professorship was established. However, there was great difficulty settling the estate due to the American Revolution, monetary inflation, and the difficulty of selling Alford's unmarketable lands in New Jersey. The settlement was further delayed by the inability of John Hancock, Harvard College treasurer, to reconcile the College funds during the American Revolution. In February 1789, Alford’s executors discharged a legal prospectus appropriating the funds accumulated by Harvard College to support "a Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity, in the said College forever, whose principal duty it shall be by lectures and private instruction to demonstrate the existence of a Diety or First Cause." Over the next few years, funds were accumulated by the Alford endowment until the Harvard Corporation decided in 1817 that sufficient funds were available to select Levi Frisbie as the first Alford Professor.".
