- catalog abstract "The six faculty reports written by Levi Hedge to the President of Harvard College and Board of Overseers in this collection dating from May 15, 1825 to September 27, 1827 document his teaching and classroom activities as College Professor of Logic and Metaphysics. These reports describe the classes that Hedge taught (seniors and juniors), the number of students in each class, the number of students attending exercises and lectures for voluntary discussions, the number of students examined, the average length of a lecture, the number of written exercises examined by Hedge and the time he spent examining them, and the number of excused and unexcused student absences during each school term. In addition, these reports also contain Hedge's comments pertaining to his disagreement with the College's attempts beginning in June 1825 (abandoned January 1827) to classify students according to academic merit and proficiency. Hedge observed that this classification scheme was causing student dissatisfaction, resentment, and disorder on campus and was leading to a large number of student absences from class. Finally, the reports in this collection offer a glimpse into philosophical instruction in the first half of the nineteenth century at Harvard University. By examining the specific textbooks mentioned in these reports one finds that philosophical instruction was dominated by English and Scottish philosophers such as William Paley, John Locke, Dugald Stewart, and Thomas Brown and the classically liberal views of French economist Jean-Baptiste Say.".

In 1827, the Logic and Metaphysics professorship was discontinued and Hedge was appointed the Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity.
