- catalog abstract "This collection contains two preliminary drafts of the alterations made to the rules and regulations of the Eliot Professorship of Greek Literature and approved by the Harvard Corporation on December 7, 1825. The amended statutes require the Eliot Professor to give personal instruction in the Greek language to undergraduates and also provide for the appointment of a Greek tutor or assistant instructor to aid the professor. In addition, the statutes outline the method of instruction to be used by the Eliot Professor. For example, the Professor must assign and explain to his students the "rhetorical beauties" of Greek authors, determine the progress of students in Greek through the use of exercises and monthly examinations, and adopt the best measures available to encourage students in the study of Greek literature and language. Moreover, the statutes require the establishment of a Board, headed by the senior professor, who will report to the President, the Corporation, and Board of Overseers, during the academic year on the progress of students and instruction in Greek. The statutes also confirm the Corporation's power to add any duties to the Eliot Professorship that might not have been outlined in the 1825 amendments so long as the additional duties are confined to the instruction of Greek language and literature.".

- catalog description "In 1825, Edward Everett (1794-1865), Eliot Professor of Greek Literature, resigned his professorship after his election to the United States Congress. At the request of the Corporation, Everett continued to perform his duties until the end of the academic year. However, before appointing a successor, the Corporation passed a resolution on March 30, 1825 to alter the duties of the Eliot Professorship so that in addition to the lectures and duties required by the statutes of the Professorship, the professor would also be required to give personal instruction in the Greek language to undergraduates, aided by an assistant instructor. In December 1826, John Snelling Popkin (1771-1852), College Professor of Greek, was elected to the Eliot Professorship and carried on instruction in Greek, assisted by a tutor, until December 1831, when Cornelius Conway Felton (1807-1862) was chosen University Professor and Permanent Tutor in Greek.".
- catalog description "The Eliot Professorship of Greek Literature was founded in 1814 by an unknown benefactor. Upon the death of Samuel Eliot (1739-1820), the Corporation was informed that he had been the benefactor, and the chair was named the Eliot Professorship of Greek Literature.".
