The inauguration took place in the Philosophy Chamber at Harvard Hall and was attended by Harvard officers, Overseers, undergraduates, resident graduates, visitors, and guests. President Kirkland began the ceremonies with a prayer, and then delivered a Latin address on the importance of the legal profession and directed that the statutes of the new professorship be read. Isaac Parker then delivered his inaugural address as the Royall Professor. Parker's address discussed the early state and gradual improvement of jurisprudence, the importance of civil law to the existence of society, and the part that a university should play in the formation of the legal profession. After Parker's address a psalm and anthem were sung and the ceremonies were closed.".
