- catalog abstract "Subscription list, 1821 August 27 (manuscript copy, 1823 February 12). This subscription list records the names of those individuals who contributed to the establishment of the Professorship of Mineralogy and Geology. This list includes a preamble explaining that the subscribers agreed to make annual payments for three years to support the professorship because the College was "unequal to support such a professorship" at the time. The list also records the amount that each subscriber contributed to the professorship's salary and that the list was a "true copy" attested to by J. T. Kirkland, President of Harvard College, and member of the Corporation. Circular letter for distribution by President John T. Kirkland, 1824 January 12 (manuscript copy). This circular letter was approved by the Corporation for use by Kirkland to help select a candidate to fill the position of Professor of Mineralogy and Geology, presumably after the resignation of Joseph Green Cogswell in 1823. The letter describes the teaching responsibilities and salary of the professorship and asks recipients to make their professorship recommendations.".

- catalog description "The study of mineralogy became established in the United States in the period 1780 to 1820 and played an important role in the development of higher education. In December 1820, Joseph Green Cogswell (A.B. 1806) was appointed Professor of Mineralogy and Geology at Harvard University, with a salary obtained by voluntary subscription. In addition to teaching, Cogswell was assigned the duties of preserving, enlarging, and arranging the school's mineralogical collection. The collection at Harvard University was started informally in 1784 with the acquisition of a small set of specimens by Benjamin Waterhouse, Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic (1783-1812). Waterhouse built his collection around useful products that could be used in the arts, scientific research, or manufacturing. The acquisition of minerals was one of the first purchases authorized by educational institutions during the early days of the United States. In 1793 Harvard Corporation established a specimen cabinet in Harvard Hall for Waterhouse's collection and appointed him the Keeper of the collection.".
