- catalog description "In May 1868, thirty donors raised three thousand dollars to establish a Fund for lectures at Harvard College "on the practical affairs of business, the mutual relations of capital and labor, and the development of national resources." The Fund was founded in the shadow of the presidential election of 1868, in which the contentious issues of southern reconstruction, the payment of government debt in paper currency or hard money, and the use of tariffs to protect domestic industry were debated. The donors hoped that a lectureship in business affairs would help encourage an open and enlightened discussion above party politics in universities around the country on such subjects as the use of national resources, modes of taxation, currency, and trade and commerce. It was the donor's desire that Harvard College would "omit no effort to aid in disseminating the true principles which govern national obligations and national integrity."".
- catalog description "The Fund, intended for distinguished persons in their specialized fields to be appointed annually by the College to offer open instruction to members of the senior class and professional schools, as well as to members of the at-large community upon payment of five dollars. Each course was to consist of twelve lectures. However, it appears that between 1868 and 1877 only one lecturer was selected to fill the Fund position. In 1877, a more formalized arrangement was negotiated between the Fund and Harvard College to select an annual lecturer with greater frequency. Lists of persons suitable to instruct students in topics related to political economy were submitted to the Fund by Harvard College. Once the list of names was approved by the donors, Harvard College had two years to hire a lecturer on the approved list. Between 1877 and 1889 lectures were given from time to time on subjects related to political economy, land tenure, free trade, protective tariffs, and socialism. On June 24, 1889 the donors relinquished their supervision and responsibility for this lectureship by divesting themselves of the unexpended account balance and gifting it to Harvard College.".
