- catalog abstract "The correspondence in this collection documents the appointment of Hermann A. Korff to the Kuno Francke Professorship of German Art and Culture in 1935. The correspondence between Korff, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Kenneth B. Murdock, and Professor F. W. C. Lieder, Chairman of the German Department, relates to President Conant's desire to learn if Korff would accept the Francke Professorship before Conant brings Korff's name before the Corporation for approval. A cable to Korff from Murdock referred to in this correspondence asks Korff whether or not he will accept the Professorship and notes the salary and travel allowance allocated to him. Korff's reply (in German) states that his acceptance of the Professorship is contingent upon his receiving permission from the German Ministry of Education to leave the University of Leipzig and confirmation of the offer in writing from Harvard University. Korff eventually accepts the offer and serves from February 1 to June 15, 1935.".

- catalog description "Hermann A. Korff (1882-1963), Professor of Literature at the University of Leipzig, was appointed Kuno Francke Professor in January 1935. He taught courses in German romanticism and literature.".
- catalog description "Kuno Francke was the principal mover in establishing a German studies program at Harvard University and was instrumental in the creation of a Harvard German Museum, serving as its curator from 1902 to 1917. Francke was considered an innovator in the classroom. Unlike his contemporaries, Francke lectured on the literature of foreign countries without requiring his students to know the native language; his readings in German literature were translated into English; and as editor of the series "The German Classics of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries," he helped make many German resources available in the English language. Francke also worked diligently in promoting mutual understanding between Germany and the United States, and in 1905 he helped launch the University's first exchange program between the two countries. After the United States entered World War I on the side of the Allies, Francke, torn between his adopted country and his homeland, resigned his professorship at Harvard University. Francke devoted his retirement years to writing and acting as a consultant to the Harvard German Museum.".
- catalog description "The Kuno Francke Professorship of German Art and Culture was established in 1929 in the memory of Kuno Francke (1855-1930), Professor of German Literature at Harvard University, through donations by prominent Americans of German ancestry, who hoped to present "the story of Germany's contributions to civilization, in the intellectual and artistic fields" in the aftermath of World War I. The first six Francke professors served brief appointments for up to one year. After 1944, all Francke professors served without a term limit.".
