Theses were academic statements intended to reflect the scope of undergraduate study, and the names of the theses collectors were printed on the Commencement Theses broadsides. During the October 17, 1814 Harvard Faculty meeting, a committee comprised of Harvard president John Thornton Kirkland and tutors Joseph Gowing Kendall and William Phillips was selected to "propose a plan for adding to the number of theses collectors."
