She was educated in Boston and in Germany, and in 1918 married F. Stanton Cawley, who went on to teach Scandinavian language and literature at Harvard until his death in 1941. They had two sons, Stanton, Jr. and Eric. After the death of her husband, Cawley worked for over thirty years as secretary at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols, a private school in Cambridge. She died in Cambridge in 1989.".
