- catalog abstract "Data on farm production and population residing on farms in the southern United States in 1860 are included in this dataset. Information was collected for over 5,000 farms located in the major cotton-producing counties of the South. The sample of farms was selected from the universe of farms located in counties where over 1,000 bales of cotton were produced in 1860. The United States manuscript census schedules for 1860 served as the source of the data, with information taken from agriculture, slave, and population schedules. For each farm, variables describing farmland, machinery, crops, and livestock are presented, as well as production figures for specific crops and types of livestock on the farm. The population variables tabulate the free and slave residents of each farm by sex and age in five or ten-year categories. The Southern Farms Study, 1860, file was initially prepared by William N. Parker (Yale University) and Robert E. Gallman (University of North Carolina).".
