- catalog abstract "The Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) from the 1980 Census contain individual- and household-level information from the ''long-form'' questionnaires distributed to a sample of the population enumerated in the Census. Three different PUMS series have been prepared, each containing a number of discrete physical files. These series are called the A Sample, the B Sample, and the C Sample. The A Sample, containing 5% data, identifies every State and most individual counties with 100,000 or more inhabitants (350 in all). In many cases, individual cities or groups of places with 100,000 or more inhabitants are also identified. The remaining territory has been subdivided into county groups. Three 1-in-1,000 samples are also available, one each extracted from the A, B, and C samples. Each of the discrete PUMS files contains two types of records: ''household'' records and ''person'' records. Although the length of each of these record types is identical (193 characters), the files are hierarchical in structure, each person record has a logical and physical relationship to the household record which precedes it. ICPSR has acquired the revised PUMS Sample A 5% and the Sample C 1% files and will acquire all of the remaining Public Use Microdata Sample files as they are released by the Census Bureau. The following studies will be available from ICPSR: PUBLIC USE MICRODATA SAMPLE (A SAMPLE): 1-PERCENT SAMPLE, PUBLIC USE MICRODATA SAMPLE (B SAMPLE): 5-PERCENT SAMPLE, PUBLIC USE MICRODATA SAMPLE (B SAMPLE): 1-PERCENT SAMPLE, and PUBLIC USE MICRODATA SAMPLE (C SAMPLE): 5-PERCENT SAMPLE. As these files are received, ICPSR will announce their availability on the ICPSR Hotline. Call 313/763-3486 for the updates.".
